Southern Lesvos
: Vatera-Geras Gulf
Sign : Yellow circle
It takes place through the green-clad and the highlands of the island. Starting-point is the village Vatera ( 1 ) and particularly the estuaries of torrent "Vourkos". As we follow its banks, we meet two picturesque villages : Ano Stavros and Kato Stavros ( 2 ). From the village Ano Stravros the road goes uphill -screw-like- through olive groves - while higher, we start walking beside the pine trees of Mt Olympos. Our next stop is village Ambeliko ( 3 ). Walking towards North, next to pine-trees and gorges of torrents, on the right, we reach the motor-way Mytilene- Polichnitos, where we meet the dried lake "Megali Tsichranta". As we continue our walking tour through the pine-clad area, we reach the mineral water spring called Tsigos and the small coffee-shops of Ayios Dimitrios, until we end up to the small town of Ayiassos ( 4 ). From there, the walker-naturalist can visit Mt Olympos through an ancient path, enjoying the luxuriant and overabundant vegetation of the entire area. As we go downhill, we reach the village Megalochori ( 5 )- which is linked to the small town of Plomari ( 6 ). Afterwards, as we follow the river Sedunta - crossing Plomari- we are going to meet the ruins of a water-driven olive press installation and then we start climbing up on the hills of the eastern river's bank. During this travelogue we are going to meet the abandoned settlement of Messouna ( 7 ). At the moment, we meet the crossroad of three paths, we choose the path on the left, which is going to guide us to the plateau of Kariona ( 8 ). From this spot, a slopping road gets us down to the village Skopelo ( 9 ) of Geras Gulf.
