The Fossilized Forest of Lesvos is at the western part of the island, among the region of the small towns Sigri, Eressos and Antissa. It covers an area of 37,500 acres. It is scientifically considered to be a unique natural monument in the world, as its rare criteria make it the epicenter of scientific research and study. The Greek State declared the Fossilized Forest as a preservable natural monument with a legislative decree, with direct aim its rational management and protection ( 1985 ).

According to this legislative decree five particular areas were chosen ( terrestrial and marine ) where the fossils are spread. It is a real forest's ecosystem that existed during the Caenophytic century ( geological period with totally developed flora ) and that was fossilized before 15-20 millions years because of the area's volcanic activity.

Today the visitor has the opportunity to admire well-preserved trunks of various trees and their organs as well : fossilized cones, leaves, branches, seeds. Particularly the fossils are mainly to be seen : at the area of Sigri, at the isle of Nishiopi, at the site Pali Alonia, at the wider area of  Antissa, Eresssos and finally at the areas of Polichnitos, Rougada, Mythimna, Akrassi and Plomari.

However the visitor has many alternative choices either choosing the classic program of visiting the Organized Park at the site "Pali Alonia" and at the isle Nishiopi, or choosing hiking tours - a perfect combination of the virgin natural environment of Lesvos with the natural monuments, as fossils are to be met at the road Antissa-Sigri and at the area of Mythimna.

We have to notice that at the site "Pali Alonia" the visitor can admire a plethora of erect trunks - finely preserved - a unique phenomenon as the area is organized and accessible through a tour of 5Km ( starting point the 8th Km of the main road Sigri-Antissa ).

The visitor has to k now that according to the legislation, the  digging out, the banking up and the sampling and every action that potentially can cause the destruction or the alteration of the geomorphical formation is strictly forbidden . The scientific research and study of the Forest is in progress and continuously revealing significant scientific data.
