It is one
of the most picturesque and well-restored medieval
settlements of Greece and Mediterranean, at the Northwestern
side of Lesvos and at a distance of 62Km away from Mytilene.
Its historic presence is found back at prehistoric times. It
is amphitheatrically built on a rocky hill, on the top of
which we can admire the medieval Castle, well restored and
used for cultural happenings during summer. Also extremely
interesting is the Turkish building of public baths. We
ca visit the Public Library and the Archaeological
Collection housed at the building of Mythimna's Town
Hall, the Public Gallery and the interesting churches
dedicated to Taxiarches ( built in 1795 ), of Ayios
Panteleimonas with special neoclassic architectural elements
( built in 1844 ), of Ayias Kyriakis and of Ayios Nikolaos.
At the edge of the settlement, the port integrates the
unique picture of the area. It is a picturesque port, with
many traditional coffee shops and fish taverns. Also there
is a wonderful beach with colorful stones. There we can see
the building of an old olive press that today restored
houses a hotel.
