MUNICIPALITY OF EVERGETOULA  

                                                                          

  The Municipality of Evergetoula is situated to the east part of the island of Lesvos.

 It is a newly composed municipality, which consists of the villages Asomatos, Ippios, Kato Tritos, Keramia, Lampou Myli, Myhou and Sykounta.

 

The Municipality got its name from the river Evergetoula, which goes through this area and flows into the Gulf of Gera.

 The centre of the municipality is the village Sykounta, which is 15 kilometres from Mytilene. 

 

 

SYKOUNTA

 

    The public services of the Municipality are installed at the village of Sykounta. 

Here is the temple of Virgin Mary, a church that was built in 1870.There is also a sign made of marble whici reveals that an older temple was there many many years before.

 

ASOMATOS

    Each one of the villages on the island has its own picturesque and traditional character that has inherited from the past.

 Asomatos is constructed on the slope of the mountain Olympos among the olive-trees and has all the traditional characteristics of the island.

 

IPPIOS

   The village Ippios is extended in the plain that is fertilized by the river Evergetoula.

KERAMIA

   

We will find the village Keramia on our way

to Agiasos some kilometres before the village of Ippios.  

 

 

LAMPOY MILOI

    

Lampou Mills are found in the road axis to Kalloni.

From there begins the pinewood of island, while the view of plain and gulf Geras is unique.

 

 

 

 

 

DIPI

 

We will find the village Lampou Myli (the Mills of Lampi) on our way to the Municipality of Kalloni.

 

 

   The area Dipi in the surroundings of the village Sykounta. The area Dipi with its commercial small port, the old industrial buildings and the taverns, is the port of the Municipality of Evergetoula. 

 

 

KATO TRITOS

    On our way to the Municipality of Gera, some kilometres from the central seaside road,

we will find among the olive groves the village Kato Tritos situated between the two hills.

This village still maintains its traditional character. 

 

 

PIGADAKIA

    This area is being slowly developed into a tourist place.

 The tourist will find here the only beach of the Municipality suitable for swimming.

He will also taste fresh fish and other delicacies to the taverns of Pigadakia.

 

MIXOU

    Mixou is settled in the street beyond Kato Tritos area. It was a Turkish village. In the pane the refugees accomodated Agios Dimitrios in 1927, that brought him from the Asia Minor. From here the way to the mountains with the olives, the pines and kastanje's leads to the chapel of Staint Ioannis

WETLANDS

   

  The marshes, which are situated in the area Dipi (river Evergetoula - marsh of Dipi) are of a very great ecological importance for the area. 

The wetland of Dipi area has a great number of birds, insects and plants.

Some of these species are unique or  rare.

 

SPRINGS-WATERMILLS

The waters of the tributary rivers create sceneries of a unique natural beauty. Some of these places, are the enchanting scenery of Agious Anargyrous with the very old plane trees and the sources of waters, the ravines of Nyhtanda, the river Andriotis and the rich water sources of Enthronos.

  TRADITION

  Most of the Municipality' s inhabitants are occupied traditionally with the cultivation of olives.

Some of the traditional professions that still exist the profession of the miller, the profession of the wood carver and the profession of the stone mason. 

 

 

ÁAGROTOURIST ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN

    In Asomatos there has been created an Agrotourist Association of Women.These women have a traditional cafe and offer traditional house made spoon sweats. Traditional products of the area are dried figs.

ECOLOGICAL FOOD PRODUCTS

   A lot of products, such as pasta, jam and other ecological products of an excellent quality and taste, with the surname "Mylelia" are made and packed at the area of Mylelia. .

CULTURAL CLUBS

    In the Municipality there are five Cultural Associations. The main purpose of the newly composed Municipality, is the revival of the old customs, the preservation of the historical records, the publishment of leaflets and the organisation of happenings.

RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS

The Religious Festival of Saint Anargyron takes place on the 1st of July, in Asomatos and the Religious Festival of Taxiarhes on the 8th of November.

The Religious Festival of Saint Prokopios takes place on the 8th of July, in Ippios.

The Religious Festival of Saint Marina takes place on the 17th of July, in Kato Tritos, and the Religious Festival of Taxiarhes takes place one day after the Easter Sunday at the Byzantine Monastery, in Kato Tritos.

The Religious Festival of Saint Georgios takes place on the 23rd of April in Keramia.

The Religious Festival of Saint Yanni takes place on the 8th of May and The Religious Festival of Saint Dimitrios takes place on the 26th of October, in Myhou.

The Religious Festival of Saint Constantine takes place on the 21st of May, in Sykounta.

The Religious Festival of Saint Yanni takes place on the 29th of August, in Dipi.

The Religious Festival of Saint Photini takes place on the Easter Thursday.
